Sam was offered a place to be a member of the Junior Orchestra of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) in 2018. He attended a spring residential course and a summer course with NYOS as well as performed at two end-of-course concerts. The total amount of the NYOS annual membership was £700. The Trust very kindly provided financial assistance for the amount of £300.
For the Spring Concert (which took place at the Albert Hall, Stirling), Sam was the Principal Oboe for two pieces, Principal Cor Anglais for two pieces and the Second Oboe for one piece of the concert programme. For the Summer Concert (which took place at the New Auditorium, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall), Sam was the Principal Oboe for two pieces, Principal Cor Anglais for two pieces and the Second Oboe for two pieces of the concert programme.
Sam has benefited from this experience in a number of ways. Firstly, he felt hugely honoured to be part of the Junior Orchestra of NYOS. Being offered a place has really boosted his conference. Secondly, he was delighted to be given the opportunity to play Principal Oboe and to play Cor Anglais for the first time in an orchestra. Thirdly, Sam’s technical skills and musicianship improved by playing with talented young musicians from all over Scotland. Last but not least, by rehearsing, performing, living, and socialising with other young musicians for two weeks, he has made good friends and with some excellent memories. In short, he thoroughly enjoyed his time with NYOS.
For this academic year, Sam has again been offered a place with the Junior Orchestra of NYOS. He has also been invited to be part of the Wind Ensemble of the Inspire Programme (part of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain).
